TODAY’S TOPIC IS: THE SPIRIT OF GREED:
SCRIPTURE ANCHOR FOR TODAY
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” 1st Timothy 6: verse 10, NKJV.
Greed is not merely the desire for money; it is the worship of more. It is the spiritual condition where the next thing always matters more than the present blessing. The greedy heart treats every provision as a down payment on a future that never arrives. This is why Scripture does not warn against wealth—it warns against the spirit that refuses to be satisfied by it. A man may have abundance and sleep soundly; another may have little and wake each morning tormented by lack. The difference is not the size of the account but the size of the appetite. Greed is spiritual inflation: the constant devaluing of what you have in pursuit of what you do not. And because greed is never truly about the thing desired—it is about the void that demands filling—satisfaction becomes impossible. The trap is not in the wanting; it is in the wanting that never ends.
Look at Judas Iscariot. He walked with Jesus Christ—the Author of Life, the Source of all blessing. Yet his heart was fastened to the money box. When Mary poured out expensive perfume at the feet of Jesus in worship, Judas’s immediate thought was not devotion but loss: “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” (John 12: verse 5, NKJV). But John tells us the truth: “This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it” (John 12: verse 6, NKJV). He could not enjoy what was in the box because he was always calculating what more could be in it.
Consider also the rich young ruler who came to Jesus. He had kept the commandments from youth; he had lived morally. Yet when Jesus called him to sell what he possessed and give to the poor, “he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions” (Matthew 19: verse 22, NKJV). His riches had become his master. He had become enslaved to his own abundance. This is the hidden tragedy of greed.
Examine your own heart today. When you receive a blessing, is your first thought gratitude—or calculation of how to multiply it? When you see what another has, do you rejoice in their blessing, or does envy whisper that you deserve more? When you achieve a financial goal, do you rest in provision, or does your mind immediately pivot to the next target?
The antidote to greed is not asceticism; it is generosity. It is the deliberate act of releasing. Give something today not from your excess when you no longer need it, but from your present store. Sow into the kingdom. Support a brother or sister. Feed someone who cannot repay you. As you do, you will teach your heart a powerful lesson: you can live without it. And in that freedom, you will discover the peace that greed can never purchase.
SPIRITUAL NUGGET.
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you’” (Hebrews 13: verse 5, NKJV). Contentment is not the absence of ambition; it is the presence of trust. It is the settled confidence that God’s provision is sufficient.
PROPHETIC PRAYERS.
Pray with me in faith.
Father, deliver me from the spirit of greed that masquerades as prosperity, ambition and vision. Forgive me for the times I have treated your blessings as mere stepping stones to the next desire. Heal the restlessness in my soul that whispers I am not enough, have not enough, and can never have enough. Teach me the power of release. Teach me to give as you give freely, abundantly, and without calculation of return. Align my desires with your kingdom values, not the world’s. Let me be a conduit of blessing, not a reservoir of hoarding. Where greed has infected my decisions, my relationships, or my witness, uproot it completely. Give me a generous heart, a content spirit, and the deep security that comes only from knowing you are my sufficiency. In Jesus mighty name, Amen and Amen.
CLOSING AFFIRMATION.
I am a steward, not an owner. My provision comes from God’s hand, not my hustle. My worth is not measured by what I possess but by whose I am. I release the grip of greed and embrace the freedom of generosity. Today, I have enough, I am enough, and my Father is more than enough for all my tomorrows.
PASTORAL BENEDICTION.
Go into this day as a distributor of blessing, not a hoarder of it. May the peace of Christ—which surpasses all understanding—guard your heart against the invasion of greed. May your hands be open to give, your heart be content with what is yours, and your spirit be fixed upon treasure that neither moth nor rust can corrupt.
